How to Play UNRAVEL: Read the Board and Release Every Block

Learn the complete UNRAVEL routine, from spotting open edge blocks to sequencing removals that create safe follow-up routes.

Understand what a safe release looks like

Every block in UNRAVEL carries its own direction. When selected, it needs a clear line from its current position to the outside of the board. Your job is to remove all of the blocks without choosing a route that is still occupied.

Begin by looking at the border rather than the crowded middle. Edge blocks have shorter paths, which makes them easier to verify and more useful for creating the first pockets of open space.

Build a sequence one opening at a time

Choose a confirmed edge block and let it leave completely. The important result is not only that one piece is gone; its former square may give a neighbouring block a new route. Inspect the cleared row and column before moving elsewhere.

Strong sequences are short and visible. Plan the current release and one likely follow-up, then check the board again. Trying to memorize a long chain is less reliable because each removal changes the information in front of you.

  • Prefer releases that expose both a horizontal and vertical lane.
  • Keep one obvious edge move as a backup while solving a blocker chain.
  • Wait for movement to stop before selecting the next block.

Finish the center without rushing

Once the outer layer is gone, the center becomes easier to read but less forgiving. Trace the complete path of every remaining block. A nearly empty board can still contain two pieces pointing into the same occupied corridor.

If all remaining routes appear blocked, reset and change the earliest move that reduced your options. A deliberate restart is faster than repeatedly testing the final cluster without understanding how it formed.
